By "the modern mechanics of continua" I mean the development, beginning in the late 1940s, of rigorous mathematical theories of large deformation of material bodies. Several limitations follow. Considering the object of study as a closed system, the application of continuum mechanics requires respecting three fundamental physical principles: - Conservation of mass, - Conservation of momentum, both linear and angular, - Conservation of energy.
