Mining was back-breaking and dangerous work – even more so than coal mining in England – and many workers were killed due to poor working conditions and explosions. WebIn 1912 there was a working coal mine at this very spot. What remains today, behind the safety of a fence, is the only coal tipple left on Vancouver Island. This large mining artifact is visible right from the parking lot. There is also a short trail to the left of the large structure called the ‘mining trail’ that goes around the tipple.
